ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO EAT THAT?

Stop for a moment before you take that bite of food, ask yourself if you know what you are eating and then ask yourself if you really do want to eat it. I suggest if you just slow down enough to think about your food you might just eat less and/or make better choices.Yes there have been studies that show if you actually think more about what you are eating you just might not eat so much or make poor choices. Seems obvious to me but recent research suggests that by being more mindful (in other words aware, attentive, conscious, present and cognizant), you will come to ask yourself: why am I eating this? People often ask me if I miss or feel deprived of not eating certain foods and my response for the most part is “no.” For the simple reason I think about the unhealthy choices, the poor choices or as I like to phrase them the “unfavorables” and that makes them less appetizing. This type of thought process means you need to have knowledge of what food is - Nutrition 101. Stopping to think about your food also means you must not allow yourself to eat when you are desperately hungry; in which situation you are more likely to reach for calorically-dense “bad” foods. Knowledge alone will not stop you from making unfavorable choices because of our emotions. Emotional eating tends to be mindless and automatic. But if you could just stop for a moment and think! Making good choices nutritionally is not about dieting; it does not about have to about giving up anything; however it is about slowing down. This could be the remedy for a fast-paced society in which an endless parade of new diets never seems to slow down the stampede toward the epidemic of obesity. In my research for writing this article I discovered that there is a new social trend circulating around out there currently called “mindful-eating”. There are monasteries and retreats all around the world that invite you to stay and eat slowly and with presence. The last few years have brought about a rash of book, blogs and videos about conscious eating. Scores of experiments and scholarly discussions are taking place. Many corporations are using this new trend, recently Google has scheduled the “mindful lunch hour” and naturally Oprah Winfrey is a cheerleader for this new practice. I am in full support of all this but I get guarded and suspicious about the “latest trends”. With the yellow flag waving “trend caution” I do support this one. I like the idea of being mindful of the food choices for your body which is of course the only place you have to live. Thich Nhat Hanh’s suggest the Apple Meditation described in his book with shared author, Dr. Lilan Cheung, (a very “popular” book right now). As he states “take an apple out of your refrigerator. Any apple will do. Wash it. Dry it. Before taking a bite, pause for a moment. Look at the apple in your palm and ask yourself: When I eat an apple, am I really enjoying eating it? Or, am I so pre-occupied with other thoughts that I miss the delights that the apple offers me?” he goes on about living in the moment and really being present for the entire time you are eating this apple. By doing this you come to experience what you are doing and create a new state of awareness.

Mindfulness is not only practices during eating; it can be practiced in all we do. Take a moment at anytime of the day and stop to witness ourselves in action. Apply this to the act of eating and you will find yourself making better choices resulting in the trend of healthy eating.

HOW WILL YOU IMPROVE YOUR LIFE THIS YEAR?

“Habit is habit, and not to be flung out the window by any man, but coaxed downstairs a step at a time” Mark Twain. Starting this month 2012 if you want improve your life for good. I suggest you start of sitting down and or better yet go for a long slow walk in nature all by yourself. Take some water and a snack so you are comfortable. Stop somewhere peaceful and be alone. Reflect for a moment upon yourself and who you are what you truly represent and what you want from life.

According to Chinese medicine, there are seven emotions: joy, fright, worry, sadness, grief, fear, anger. Actions are often based on emotions. Yes we all have our demons we battle, sometimes we win, and sometimes we lose. We usually lose when we are governed by emotion, which includes giving up on our New Year’s resolutions. The way to overcome and win has often been referred to as “will power”. This concept has many names: delayed gratification, self control and Freud’s coined term of “impulse control”. People who lack the psychological trait of being able to delay gratification are said to require instant gratification and might suffer poor impulse control.

I believe that no matter what habit or trait you would like to change success begins with the right mindset. “As you think, so shall you be”. As you sit there in solitude with nature resolve to change the way you look at things. Lay out a plan and commit to it no matter how you feel in the moment. Choose free will and act upon it. You have control over your reality and you have the ability to create your world, why would you not want to maximize that and create the life you want?

This is the time of year to clarify and map out your journey. Set some goals, write them down and begin the pursuit. Once you believe and visualize your goals you are on the way to achieving them. The reality is obstacles will present themselves they always do, but so does opportunity. Learn to look for them and not at the obstacles. It is like what I use to say when I bike racing and trying to avoid a crash. “Look where you want to go and do not look where you do not want to go.” By the way it worked very well and I avoided a number of terrible crashes. This will work in your life as well.

Your mind is very powerful and intelligent and that can work for you or against you. When you set new and higher goals for yourself you are in reality asking your mind and your current belief system to change and work in a different way. In other words you are changing your mind! New Year’s resolutions are goals we set for ourselves that are usually about fixing something about ourselves. In order to fix a problem we need to look at how we got where we are now.

Start you journey in to 2012

  1. Mindset: Every day you can make a decision to continue on the path you’re on or to do something different. Your days, hours, and minutes are made up of all the individual decisions you make. Each decision is an opportunity to change your life for the better.
  2. Simplify: This is a big part of my life right now, trying to clear out all the extra physical stuff you have. Cleaning out the environment you live in and getting rid of “stuff”.
  3. Clarifying: Our values drive our daily actions and decisions. Spend time thinking about your values and what you truly care about, what you want to change in your life, and why you believe these things. If you’re clear on your values then set resolutions that align with them won’t be difficult.
  4. Think: Think of how the new belief is going to improve your life. Think of what is going to be possible. How is changing this going to influence your life in an amazing way? What is going to improve? How much more happiness, joy and fulfillment will you get if you adopt this belief?
  5. Now Stop thinking: Over thinking keeps us from acting.

“Your beliefs become your thoughts. Your thoughts become your words. Your words become your actions. Your actions become your habits. Your habits become your values. Your values become your destiny.”

BELLY FAT (There I Said It)!

BELLY FAT (There I Said It)!We have spent a bunch of time discussing commitment and motivation. You have started the New Year and are feeling a better. That is all good and well, but talk is cheap. Now it’s time to get down to some nitty gritty and there is nothing nittier or grittier then that “belly fat”! What is it and how do you get rid of it? I get this question over and over again and it usually involves the person asking the question lifting their and shirt and grabbing “it” to show me exactly what they mean. Like I don’t already know? I will try and resolve this mystery stuff and maybe you don’t have to show me your “stuff” any more. Belly fat (BF) has not always been your problem but somewhere between 30 and now your mid section which use to be smaller than your upper and lower section is not anymore. What’s up with that? Gaining fat in your abdomen is particularly unhealthy when compared with other locations in your body. You may think BF is limited to the stuff our front that you can grab with your hand – but it’s the fat you can’t see that’s really a cause for concern. Visceral fat lies deeper inside the abdomen, surrounding the abdominal organs. Gaining this type of fat has been linked to cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other health problems. Subcutaneous fat, located between the skin and the abdominal wall, is more visible but also less likely to be a health risk. Another interesting fact that I didn’t know is: researchers have found is that abdominal fat cells aren’t just dormant energy waiting to be burned up. The cells are active, producing hormones and other substances that affect your health. For example, some fat-cell-produced hormones can promote insulin resistance, a precursor to type 2 diabetes; others can produce estrogen after menopause, which may increase your breast cancer risk. The slowing down of your metabolism and the decrease in physical activity contributes to overall weight gain as you age, but those factors do not contribute to visceral fat accumulation directly. You might be able to blame some of this on a hereditary influence. Hormonal changes after menopause may change the way body stores fat. What's the best way to lose belly fat? Sit down this is really going to surprise you. The best way to lose abdominal fat is to eat right and exercise regularly. And there's a growing body of research to show that the fastest way to burn off the fat from your belly is with a combination of weight training and aerobic exercise. Research published in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition compared the effectiveness of two exercise and diet programs. Subjects involved were divided into two groups. • Group one followed a diet based on the traditional food guide pyramid (50-55% carbohydrate; 15-20% protein; less than 30% fat). They also did (“fat burning zone”) cardiovascular exercise 4-6 days a week. Each workout lasted 30-60 minutes. • Group two followed a diet that was higher in protein and lower in carbohydrate and fat. Their exercise program consisted of alternating days of resistance and cardiovascular interval training six days per week. Body composition was assessed by dual x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) before and after the 12-week training program. DEXA is an extremely accurate way to measure changes in body fat. It’s far more reliable than the skin fold calipers or body fat scales often used in health clubs. And the results were? Subjects in group two (remember, these were the people who lifted weights as well as the more intense cardio, and ate more protein) lost more fat overall (-20.6%) than group one (-10.1%). They also gained 2 pounds of muscle (0.9 kilograms) while the cardio-only group, not surprisingly, lost muscle. More interesting still, abdominal fat dropped by 26% in group two, but by just 13.5% in group one. In other words, subjects in group two lost almost twice as much belly fat as those in group one. So what does this tell you? Firstly you will need to exercise! Only 30 to 40 minutes of cardio in that so called “fat burning zone” two or three times a week isn’t going to cut it. A full body training program that includes both cardiovascular and resistance exercise will deliver the results you are looking for. At the risk of being redundant …again! You'll also need to eat the right foods and in reasonable portions. I know it's a cliché, but a flat stomach starts in the kitchen. Finally, you'll need to be consistent. To lose belly fat, eating right and exercising regularly needs to become a habit, not just something you do when you "have the time." If your existing schedule makes it difficult to find the time for exercise- change it! Get out of bed earlier. Turn off the TV. Stop wasting time on Facebook.

FEAR

Ask Janice When is the last time you took a risk? Not like bunging jumping or big wave surfing, but something that meant you had to come out of your comfort zone and make a personal commitment to changing something in yourself that you knew would make you happier?

Now is the time to take that journey? Fear is holding you back, is almost always is. It’s the primary reason we keep doing what we do that is in our comfort zone. It is scary to try and do something different.  What if we can’t or what if we can and then what? On and on its goes....

Fear of something bad happening in the future is one of the things that make us human.

This fear, some might say, is necessary … it stops us from doing something stupid. But I’ve found most of these fears to be unnecessary, to be baseless, to be holding us back from achieving something. But here’s the thing: having the fear is natural. Letting it stop you from going after your dreams is a tragedy.

But here’s the secret most people don’t know. It’s a secret that most successful people know. You don’t actually have to “conquer” fear. You have to master it. Mark Twain once said, “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear – not absence of fear.” Successful people aren’t people who conquered fear; they’re people who faced fear. They’re people who were afraid and did it anyway.”

I am sharing this with you because I see it as the “thing” that gets in our way and that really bugs me.  It’s such a shame that we keep ourselves from experiencing life to it’s fullest (whatever that means for you), and it doesn’t have to be that way.  What has worked for me is first realizing in that moment what is happening and I do mean in that moment. Then as soon as you take the time to recognize it (fear takes the shape of anxiety, worry, nervousness and tension), you have a choice to walk right into it. I see it literally as smoke and mirrors. The “walk” into the smoke is in your mind first then in your body. Try this exercise any time you are feeling anxious about anything. It’s amazing how well it works.

Changing habits is scary!

It means stepping up to the plate and changing the way you have done things in the past. It’s not a diet it’s a lifestyle change. It’s a commitment to yourself and how you want to be in this world. That takes courage. The good news is it can be done! I have seen it with my own eyes, many times.

In fact I am going to share with you a current story right here in our own community. Steve and Sharon, almost one year ago joined Fit Manzanita (the local fitness club in Manzanita) and started their journey. They walked through the smoke and mirrors and succeeded. Here are the reasons they gave: Reason for embarking on fitness quest: felt need to align values /beliefs about the importance of healthy life with how we actually lived day-to-day.  “Being an example to my patients was part of it.  It helps to be able to say to them that I do it – so you can too.”  For Sharon, it was a matter of displaying a fit self when speaking to groups about managing the health of their citizen population, as she did recently to a group of Canadian Health Ministers, or managing the health of a corporations’ employee group. Also important was desire to have more energy and hopefully reduce health risk factors long term.”

Here is something Sharon wanted to share: “Many people, especially women it seems, believe after 45 they can’t do anything about the extra pounds, for example.  They really believe it is just a part of the aging process.  That is just not the case.  You can do it.  Just start and then do as much as you can each day.  Little by little you get stronger…and it becomes easier and something you actually look forward to.  Ok – I didn’t’ believe it either.  The first day I tried the elliptical, I could honestly only do 5 minutes.  I renamed it a “torture device.”  Now I can do 4 miles in 55 minutes and feel great afterwards.  All that happened in 5 short months.  In addition, it helps to draft a partner to help.  They do their workouts at the same time and encourage each other when one wants to skip a session or gets discouraged.”

As of today, Steven has lost 60 pounds and has dramatically increased his muscles. Sharon has lost 22 pounds and is determined to lose another 10 or so.  Do you think they were a bit scared of this journey? You bet they were. Are they anymore? I am guessing not and I expect they are looking for their next adventure in life.

You can be whatever you want to be!
